Spirits Travel West, Face Brevard

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem volleyball team returns to action when it heads to the North Carolina mountains for a clash with fellow USA South Conference member Brevard on Friday, Sept. 6 at 6 p.m.

The Spirits head into their second weekend of play with a 2-2 mark after emerging victorious against Wilson (3-0) and Delaware Valley (3-1) at the Route 42 Classic on August 30-31. Meanwhile, Brevard owns an 0-3 mark after suffering setbacks to Rhodes (3-0), St. Catherine (3-0) and Birmingham-Southern (3-0) in succession a week ago.

Salem is led offensively by the combination of Kathryn O'Connell (37 kills; 2.64 kills/set), Brooklyn Snow (28; 2.00), Taylor Moulton (26; 1.86) and Madelyn Chappell (25; 1.92). Collectively, that unit has provided the Spirits with a 20-kill advantage (155-135) over their opponents. Defensively, Salem owns an advantage in digs (213-200) and total blocks (18-11), led by O'Connell who tops all individuals with 50 digs and 10 total blocks.

The Tornados are led individually by Sydney Fox (16 kills; 1.78 kills/set), Mariana Rodriguez (47 digs; 5.22 digs/set) and four others who have amassed one total block each. Brevard is searching to find rhythm in its offense, posting just 50 kills in nine sets last weekend, while the defense combined for 143 digs.


Salem 3, Delaware Valley 1: Salem capitalized on a pair of double-digit kill outings by O'Connell (12), who received All-Tournament honors, and Snow (10) as the team amassed 45 kills in the 25-18, 25-11, 24-26, 25-18 victory. O'Connell put together her second double-double of the tournament, finishing with a team-best 12 digs, while Hannah Delcamp added nine.

The Spirits also combined for 10 assisted blocks, highlighted by five from O'Connell and two each from Delcamp and Snow. Delcamp handed out a match-high 39 assists in the second win of the season for the Spirits.

Eastern Mennonite 3, Salem 1: After wrapping up the morning session with a win, Salem returned to the court to face co-host Eastern Mennonite, who prevailed in four sets by scores of 25-19, 14-25, 23-25, 18-25. The Spirits were led offensively by the combination of Taylor Moulton (nine kills), Madelyn Chappell (nine), Brooklyn Snow (nine) and Kathryn O'Connell (eight).

Moulton and O'Connell not only left an impression on the Salem offensive, but the pair came through with 17 and 15 digs, respectively, while Corrin Shores and Alexis Sunderland contributed nine apiece. Hannah Delcamp piloted the offense with 39 assists.
