The Salem College Athletics Program is composed of seven intercollegiate sports: basketball, cross country, volleyball, soccer, softball, tennis, and lacrosse. Salem College is a NCAA Division III member of the USA South Athletic Conference.
Salem became full-time members of NCAA Division III during the 2007-2008 school year. Previous to admission into the NCAA, all sports at Salem were club programs.
For the first three years, Salem was a member of the Association of DIII Independents. The Spirits joined the Great South Athletic Conference in 2009, where they would be members until the conference disbanded in the spring of 2016. Salem was admitted into the 18-member, USA South Athletic Conference and their first year in the conference was 2016-17.
The Spirits won the Great South President's Cup three years, and finished in 8th in the USA South President's Cup for best overall program during their first year in the conference.
